What is it that makes us westerners insist upon happy endings? Don’t get me wrong — I’m all for ’em — but so many Asian cultures produce books with terrible endings; the more heartbreakingly ironic the ending, the better the story.

Not only do I want a happy ending, sometimes I’m aggravated when there’s too much manufactured conflict. I was feeling this way when I wrote Safeword: Matte, and as a result we get to see two people coming together and finding their own path without a lot of drama thrown in from all directions.
