Editing Services

I am available for editing paranormal romance, urban fantasy, Mm romance, poly romance, BDSM romance, and dark romance. Possibly others, but double-check with me to be sure. If I’m not fluent in what’s expected of your work’s genre, I’ll let you know.

My prices are:

  • Correction of typos, plus input about BDSM/Mm/Poly/etc aspects: .015 per word with a $40 minimum
  • The above, plus input on how to tighten your writing and add punch (I’ll also point out echos, places you should show instead of tell, passages you may be showing too much and bogging things down, areas it might be good to let the reader know how a character feels, and any grammar and rhythm issues — here are some basic fiction grammar issues I’ll look for): .025 per word with a $40 minimum  (Can sometimes come down to .02 per word if I’ve worked with you before.)

Bonus: If I edit your manuscript, I’ll help you with the blurb at no extra charge once payment is made in full. This means one rough draft of a blurb you can then polish and change on your own, and one final edit of your blurb for typos and grammar issues. I do not specialize in blurbs, but I’ve had lots of practice, so I can give you a starting point.

If you’d like to send a 500 to 800 word sample (preferably the beginning of the story) to get an idea of my style, that will be good. I prefer to work with Word, but I can use other software and services.

Below is what I’ve previously offered, and is still good with the above prices.

I regularly get requests from authors who want me to look over their BDSM scene to make sure it’s authentic, and while I’m more than happy to do this for authors I regularly swap beta reads with, it’s becoming a time sink from authors I don’t know. I’m truly flattered, but the requests have gotten out of hand.

I think the way around this is to offer it as a paid service. I’ve been in the lifestyle for thirty-five years and can tell you what’s generally accepted as the norm within the scene, but I can’t offer any degrees or certificates as proof I know what I’m talking about. I can also tell you the BDSM activities my readers have accepted versus what some have had trouble with, and my books have thousands of reviews on Goodreads to back that statement up.

Please send your synopsis, excerpts, or manuscript in .docx format. Unless you request otherwise, comments to specific sections of text will happen in comment bubbles. My thoughts on the entirety of what you provide will be sent separately.

I’ll give input on what’s acceptable amongst those in the lifestyle as well as what my readers have taken issue with over the years. I’ll also explain any safety issues as I understand them – readers usually expect the Dom to understand safety issues, and most get annoyed and lose respect for the character if it isn’t mentioned, however briefly, so they’re assured he or she isn’t carelessly putting the sub at risk.

Billing will be through squareup.com and is due upon receipt of invoice, fifty percent up front for the first job I do for you. Email me or message me on FB to see how my schedule looks and when I can fit you in – candaceblevins.com/contact. I usually respond quickest on FB messenger, and that allows for an easier conversation.

If you can’t swing the extra for me to tighten your writing and help give your words punch, you may find the following page of things you can do on your own helpful. Also, if you’re wondering what I’ll be looking for in the most expensive option, this is part of it.  candaceblevins.com/2017/04/advice-to-beginning-fiction-writers
